The Health Promotion Unit and Wellness Clinic at Madina Polyclinic (Kekele Hospital) in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality has launched the breast cancer awareness month on Monday, October 3, 2022 at the forecourt of the hospital.
The event marks the start of series of activities targeted at creating breast cancer awareness every year in October, which has been designated as world breast cancer awareness month.
In her speech, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Abena Kesiwaa Kyei encouraged women and those who are at risk to take advantage of the activities in October and have their breasts examined, for early detection can prevent the worse from happening.
The Municipal Health Director, Dr. Mrs. Priscilla Anima Poku, took the audience through some education and touted the improvement in the management of cancer and advised that constant examination of the breast by those at high risk was the surest way for early detection.
Dr. Mrs. Poku who chaired the function disclosed that between 2019 and 2022, a total of 44 breast cancer cases had been recorded at the Kekele Hospital alone.
As part of the breast cancer awareness campaign, the Kekele hospital would carry out free breast cancer screening throughout the month of October. Present at the launch were some Assembly Members, health professionals, Traditional Leaders, traders and market women.
Also known as ‘Pink October’, people around the world adopt the pink colour and display a pink ribbon to raise awareness about breast health and the importance of screening for early diagnosis of breast cancer, now the most commonly diagnosed cancer globally.
