The Department of Agriculture is responsible for coordinating and supervising all agricultural activities in the Municipality. The municipality has 8 operational areas with 31 farming communities. Agricultural activities in the municipality include:
- Crop and vegetable production
- Livestock and poultry rearing
- Alternative livelihood activities
- Mushroom production
- Rabbit and grass cutter rearing
The goal of the department is to ensure development of agriculture and sustainability of the agro-environment in the Municipality.
Objectives
Based on the role of agriculture in the national development framework, Food and Agriculture Sector Development Policy (FASDEP II) has the following as its objectives:
- Food Security and Emergency Preparedness
- Improved Growth in Incomes
- Increased competitiveness and enhanced integration into domestic and international markets
- Sustainable management of land and environment
- Science and Technology Applied in Food and Agriculture development
- Improved Institutional Coordination
The Department of Agriculture has its core mandate to be:
- The department, with its mother ministry being Ministry of Food and Agriculture is the lead agency and focal point of the Government of Ghana. It is responsible for developing and executing policies and strategies for the agriculture sector within the context of a coordinated national, socio-economic growth and development agenda
- The department which by means of a sector-wide approach, the Ministry’s plans and programs is developed coordinated and implemented through policy and strategy frameworks
- In this regard, MOFA facilitated the preparation of the Food and Agriculture Sector Development Policy (FASDEP II) and the Medium Term Agriculture Sector Investment Plan (METASIP 2010 – 2015)
