The department of social welfare is one of the departments under the Ministry of Children, Gender and Social Protection. It has national responsibility of the social welfare services. The mission of the department is working in partnership with people in the communities to improve their social well-being through promoting development with equity for the disadvantaged and excluded. The vision is to take the lead in integrating disadvantaged people into the mainstream of development

Goals

The goal of the department is to promote and implement government policies and public services that can substantially improve social inclusion, development of people and communities.

Objectives

The key objectives of the department of Social Welfare and Community development include the following:

• To improve Community – Based Rehabilitation Program (CBR) in all communities for all people with disabilities.
• To create awareness in the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS in collaboration with Ministry of Health and District Assemblies and other agencies and community care strategies.
• To facilitate opportunities for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to develop social service s in collaboration with communities.
• To create awareness on population issues and family planning.
• To promote poverty alleviation and ensure income security amongst vulnerable, marginalized and disadvantaged groups.
• To promote social, economic and emotional stability in families.
• To coordinate and regulate special residential services for children under privileged youth and the disabled.

Mandate

The department has its core mandate as to:

• Take the lead in integrating disadvantaged people into mainstream of development.

• Provide Community care
• Ensure Child Right Promotion and Protection
• Ensure Justice Administration in  the preparation of social  enquiry reports
