The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has held a one-day workshop to sensitize the Hon. Assembly members on the HIV and AIDS pandemic and how to combat it in the municipality.
The Municipal Director of Health, Dr. Mrs. Priscilla Anima Poku, speaking at the program stated the signs and symptoms of a person living with HIV and further briefed everyone on the statistics of HIV/AIDS in the Municipality and sensitized members on the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS.
The forum was aimed at curbing the stigmatization and discrimination associated with the persons living with the virus and how they should be treated in their communities. In addition, as a first measure, “some sex workers have been trained to help curb the situation.
Ms. Rita Afriyie of the Technical Support Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission stressed the need for persons living with HIV (PLHIV) to be given equal opportunity to showcase what they can do best and entreated stakeholders to grant PLHIV equal employment opportunities.
She said that stigmatization and discrimination kill faster than HIV and urged the Hon. Assembly members to convey the information across as well as educated people in their respective electoral areas on the ways to curb the HIV and AIDS menace.
The Municipal Focal person, Mama Setriakor II also made an appeal to Hon. Assembly members to help look for support for the PLHIV, especially foods. She, therefore, thanked the members for their attention and contributions.
Hon Assembly members also gave their assurances to support the fight against HIV and AIDS through sensitization in their various communities.
