LaNMMA Failed To Elect A Presiding Member For The Third Time

For the third time running in a keenly contested election held on Friday 15th February 2024, the La-Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly failed to elect a Presiding Member to steer affairs of the fourth assembly.

Contesting for the position were Hon. Nicholas Nii Koi Ashie, a Government Appointee who was number one on the ballot and Hon. Abdul Razak, an Elected Member, who was the second.

On the third successive occasion after polling, out of twenty-three (23) votes, Hon Nicholas Ashie had eight (8) votes while his opponent, Hon. Abdul- Razak polled fifteen (15) votes but unfortunately, the latter didn’t emerge as the winner due to the insufficient number of votes from both parties.

The constitution stipulates that after three rounds of voting successively, if no candidates secures two-thirds of the total votes cast, the contesting candidates would step aside for fresh candidates to be put forward.

In fulfilment of that clause, the way is cleared for new candidates to file their nomination and contest for the position after none of the two candidates emerged as an undisputed winner.

In the initial election, after two rounds of voting, Nicholas Nii Koi Ashie, secured nine (9) votes in each round, while Ibrahim Abdul Razak, had fourteen (14) votes in both rounds.

The election, supervised by officials of the Electoral Commission, had each of the candidates failing to gather two-thirds (2/3) of total votes cast to secure the position of a Presiding Member of the Assembly.

In attendance were the MCE, Mrs. Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, all Assembly Members of the municipality, medical personnel and security officials.
