Traders Appeal to Authorities for Extension of Vacation Date Prior to Reconstruction of Madina Market

Scores of traders at the Madina Market about to benefit from a new facelift of the market have raised a couple of concerns in the lead up to the takeoff of the reconstruction project.

The two-story reconstruction work is expected to be completed by the end of November which when completed will have a total of 48 sheds and 180 shops.

Recently, part of the main Madina market in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal got burnt rendering most of the market women whose shops and sheds got burnt jobless, creating economic and financial stress to them.

A section of the traders mostly cloth sellers, argued strongly that they prefer their sheds to the shop cubicles to be constructed adding that they cannot bear the cost of waiting till completion and the possibility of being asked to make financial contributions.

With the area being cordoned off under a three-day vacation notice, another section of the traders complained of the short notice and passionately appealed to the authorities to extend the vacation deadline to enable them sell off and relocate their stocks to forestall potential losses and business setback.

Responding to these concerns, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Jennifer Dede Adjabeng on Tuesday, August 20, 2024 upon consultation with the contractor agreed to extend the date to 31st August, 2024.

She said prior to the fire incident, the roof of the building leaks anytime it rains, a situation which was compelling enough to undertake the project for the security and comfort of traders.
