The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has deployed technical and environmental experts to assess the impact of the recent devastating torrential rains in the municipality.
Following the last Sunday, May 18, 2025 torrential rains that had most parts of Accra experiencing flooding with its accompanying destruction of properties, residents of the municipality were not left out.
Accompanying the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ibrahim Faila Fusseini on the Municipal- wide visit were the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Abena Kwesiwa Kyei and the Development Planning Officer, Mr. Frederick Asiama.
The rest were Head of Works Department, Nana Ohene Debrah; Head of Physical Planning, Mr. Owusu-Afriyie and Head of Urban Roads, Nikki Banahene.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Francis Xavier Sosu joined the team at Teiman.
As part of their mission, the team empathized with residents who were gravely affected by the devastating rains and assured of remedial measures being taken by the assembly to address the aftermath of the rains.
Areas visited included Nkwantanang, REDCO Zipline, Powerland community, Sakora, Teiman EP Church, Oyarifa New York and REDCO warehouse.
Following the visit, some identified emerging issues included inadequate drains, buildings sitting on waterways, undulating topography, siltation of water channels, encroached drainage channel among others.
In a remark following the visit, Hon. Faila said the assembly would continue to prioritize the security and safety of residents, especially with the onset of the rains.
He mentioned proposed remedial measures as re-engineering of the communities drainage network, provision of drainage infrastructure, public education on proper waste management, demolition of structures on waterways, desilting of existing drains among others.
He cautioned the people to desist from building on waterways and all other negative practices that might hamper the free flow of water during the rains and cause havoc.
The MCE said the assembly would continue to clamp down on unscrupulous persons who flout the assembly’s bye -laws.
He urged developers to always apply for building permits before embarking on all forms of development to avoid being victims to any demolition exercise.
