The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) has embarked on what could be described as one of the most ambitious moves to bring order and sanity in the market enclave. As part of the measures, the assembly intends to put in place sustainable measures to promote security on the roads and pedestrian safety.
To this end, the Municipal Security of the assembly has deployed personnel to focal areas of the municipality to undertake surveillance and inspection of trading activities endangering public safety.
The Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) operations forms part of a series of measures to decongest the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal, enhance sanitation standards while ensuring safer roads for pedestrian usage.
The well intended exercise which was led by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Ibrahim Faila Fusseini on Saturday, May 24, 2025, saw the team visiting Zongo Junction, Madina market, Ritz junction including the Redco market segment.
At a media briefing following the exercise, Hon. Fusseini underscored the relevance of citizens’ involvement and participation in local governance. The operation brought the spotlight on areas where there were unauthorized structures and encroachment.
“In local governance, citizenship engagement is necessary for decision making as in a practicing democracy. Some of the traders running away from their location upon seeing us, meaning they know what they’re doing is wrong”, he said
The MCE disclosed that assembly members have sensitized traders and drivers on proper market practices, adding that some are still adamant. He, however, was quick to add that authorities would not hesitate to clamp down on recalcitrant persons caught in the fray.
“We will give them two weeks to retreat voluntary. Failing to do so, we will deploy the full complement of the taskforce to decongest the area “, he said.
On his part, the Madina Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Dr. Sarah Aba-Afari hinted of enforcement measures to be intensified soon to ensure compliance.
She said Madina is a cosmopolitan area with people from all walks of life coming in, adding that some drivers and traders were unduly taking advantage of the situation to endanger public safety and order.
“Selling on the street induces road obstruction. We will arrest offenders and arraign them before court for prosecution”, she said.
The canker of traders taking over the streets and its attendant dangers has been an age-old menace plaguing some cities in the country.
