ISD, Fire Service Collaborate To Sensitize Public on Fire Prevention

The Information Services Department [ISD] of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Ghana National Fire Service have embarked on a fire prevention sensitization exercise at Madina and Bohye markets.

The objective of the exercise was to educate traders and all users of the market spaces on dangers of the mix used of market spaces, it was also to sensitize users of the market spaces on measures needed to avoid frequent incidents of fire.

The exercise became necessary following a directive from the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council for all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly [MMDAs] to embark on a sustained public sensitization exercise on fire prevention. The directive was intended to curb the rising incidents of fire outbreak in the region.

Undertaking the exercise by the joint team in Madina and Bohye markets, the team met with leaders of the two markets to inform them of the dangers of the mixed use of markets spaces and fire outbreaks. It was also to seek their support for the exercise.

During the engagement with the market leaders, some concerns raised was to the effect that some traders leave their shops without  putting off the sockets and other appliances, others complained of improper wiring of the shops which they link possibly to shoddy and unprofessional work by artisans.

The market leaders appealed to the assembly to prevail on unscrupulous traders who continue to sell at their current location which was supposed to be temporal, to move to the completed stalls which was intended for their use following the fire outbreak.

On the next lap of the exercise, the team was to visit hotspots such as corn millings, pepper grinding and groundnut roasting areas in the market.
