The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) has announced progress on a number of major development projects, including road construction, market redevelopment and the Assembly’s version of the government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Alhaji Ibrahim Faila Fusseini, made this known when he delivered the Sessional Address at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Fourth Assembly on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

The address, delivered in accordance with Section 28(2) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), highlighted developments in infrastructure, health, education, sanitation and security across the municipality.

Road projects progressing

On road infrastructure, the MCE said construction works on the 8.3-kilometre Pantang Junction–Pantang Hospital and Link Roads were progressing steadily.

He said drainage and earthworks were ongoing under the project being executed by Awerco Construction Limited, with tarring expected to commence soon.

According to him, road works were also ongoing in the Oyarifa Gravel Pit Area, while upgrading works in the Teiman Burger Town Area were advancing despite concerns raised by some residents.

24-Hour Economy project to begin

The MCE also announced that encumbrances on land earmarked for the Assembly’s 24-Hour Economy Market in Madina had been cleared, paving the way for construction to begin.

He said work was expected to commence the following week and called on stakeholders to support the project to ensure its timely completion.

The project, he noted, was expected to create employment opportunities and contribute to the growth of the local economy.

The Assembly has additionally received unsolicited proposals for the redevelopment of approximately 4.23 acres of the Madina Main Market, including the old Assembly office, into a modern multi-purpose high-rise market complex.

The proposed development would include a basement vehicle terminal. The proposals are expected to be presented to the Assembly for consideration and approval before Public-Private Partnership arrangements are activated.

Market and office projects

The MCE reported that the second phase of the Madina Market Reconstruction Project had been completed and was awaiting formal handing over to the Assembly.

The phase comprises two blocks of 18-unit, three-storey retail shops and two blocks of 24-unit market sheds.

At the Oyarifa Zonal Council, the superstructure of a three-storey office accommodation block, which includes a conference hall and ancillary facilities, has also been completed.

He said management had commenced processes to secure electricity meters and other essential services ahead of the facility’s operationalization.

Progress in health and education

In the health sector, the MCE disclosed that construction of a 150-square-metre clinic and a two-unit nurses’ quarters at Baba Yara Community in Madina was almost complete and ready for handing over.

He further said finishing works on the Baba Yara Basic School classroom block were expected to be completed by the end of August.

Meanwhile, construction of a six-unit classroom block at Pantang Hospital Basic School had reached 75 per cent completion.

Sanitation and security concerns

The Assembly, he said, had intensified efforts to improve sanitation through monthly clean-up exercises undertaken by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit.

He added that a two-day emergency clean-up exercise was conducted on July 9 and 10, 2026, following flooding in parts of the municipality.

The Assembly is also enforcing its sanitation bye-laws, with notices issued to residents and other persons found violating the regulations.

On security, Hon. Fusseini identified drug peddling, prostitution and petty theft as some of the major challenges confronting the municipality.

He assured the House that the Assembly was collaborating with relevant stakeholders to address the challenges and improve security within the municipality.

MCE calls for unity

Concluding his address, Hon. Fusseini urged Assembly members to work together and remain committed to their responsibilities. He said the success of the Assembly depended largely on the level of cooperation among members and stakeholders in the discharge of their duties.

The session was attended by the Member of Parliament, Assembly Members, Heads of Departments and Units, and other stakeholders.
