Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies within the Greater Accra Region have been tasked by the Regional Minister to “Make Accra Work” in a campaign that is meant to rally the support of the Assemblies as well as the general public to bring sanity and order within the communities and market places.
The La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly in its effort to ‘’Make Accra work’’ carried out a decongestion exercise within the Madina Market which is the Central Business District of the Municipality on Sunday 27th February 2022.
The exercise was meant to ensure that all unauthorised structures and other nuisance activities within the market enclave were removed. It was also to rid the roads and streets of hawkers and sellers encroaching on the various roads in order to allow for free flow of vehicular and human movements.
Task force from the Municipal Assembly began the exercise from Saturday midnight through Sunday morning. Unauthorised kiosks, tables and shops were cleared to prevent road encroachment and congestion on the road and the market places as a whole.
The affected areas included Baba Seidu Road which stretches from Zongo Junction to the main Madina Market, Masalachi area, La Nkwantanang School Junction, Ritz Junction, Oman FM and Faith Baptist Church etc.
In an address the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mrs Kwesiwa Kyei was convinced the exercise has been long overdue. She said the sellers and unauthorized occupants have been warned several times to relocate to the Redco market; an alternate market centre established for commercial activities but had been abandoned because traders have refused to patronise it.
She was very clear in her conviction that the Assembly is very resolute in ensuring that order is restored and maintained at the Central Business District.
The Municipal Environmental and Health Officer Mr Quaicoe encouraged the traders to buy into the vision of the Assembly to make Madina work, and to create a conducive environment in the municipality.
