The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for La Nkwantanang-Madina, Mrs. Jennifer Dede Adjabeng has pledged undisclosed award packages for best schools in the tree planting exercise held during the second edition of the Green Ghana Day on Friday, June 10, 2022.
She said the criteria would be based on schools which were able to nurture their trees to maturity with all trees surviving in a year to come.
The tree-planting exercise formed part of measures to minimize the impact of climate change and its harmful effects on human population globally.
The event witnessed schools, churches, Non-Governmental Organizations, Assembly Staff and the general public joining hands to plant the trees.
She encouraged the public to avail themselves to support the vision of the government to sustain and preserve the environment.
Mrs Dede urged the schools to make tree planting a major part of their extra- curricular activities adding that trees should not just be planted but should be given full attention till its maturity.
The Head teacher of Cluster one Resource Centre, Mr. Bonti Seth Attah assured the MCE of the commitment of the school to mainstream tree planting as a practice that has come to stay with the school.
He seized the opportunity to appeal to government to fence the school compound to prevent encroachment to promote security in the school.
The Director of Parks and Gardens, Antoinette Enyonam Amegbletor said the exercise, which took place in the 15 electoral areas was highly successful.
According to her, the exercise which was held on district basis saw about ten thousand trees being planted across the municipality. She however, appealed to other individuals and organisations who have spaces at their premises can come for more seedlings for planting, and as she put it, “the exercise is a process and not an event.”
Among the MCE’s entourage were Mr. Kwaku Ohene Gyan and Mr Paul Appiah Owusu, Deputy Executive Director in charge of operations and Director in charge of Administration respectively at the National Service Secretariat.
