Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), His Excellency Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has donated an amount of two hundred thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc 200,000.00) to victims of the recent Madina fire disaster.
The donation was offered to enable victims revive their businesses and regain their livelihoods which have been disrupted following the incident.
On Wednesday, 10th April 2024, fire gutted a one story building of the Madina main market including numerous container shops on the opposite side of the building.
To further empower their businesses, under the auspices of the Vice President, the victims would receive financial support from the Ghana Enterprises Agency through its Women’s Empowerment Programme.
His Excellency Dr. Bawumia made the donation when he paid a consolation visit to the affected traders in the market on Friday, 19th April, 2024.
Upon arrival, he was conducted round the burnt building after which he paid a courtesy call on sections of traders in the market amid loud cheers.
Addressing the victims, His Excellency Dr. Bawumia said he received the news of the fire incident at the market with a heavy heart upon which he decided to initiate steps to visit and support the traders.
His Excellency urged the traders to sign up for fire insurance to secure them in unforeseen incidents such as fire disasters.
The Vice President also disclosed that a two-storey building would be newly constructed which would contain 120 shops with about 78 small shops on the premises.
Touching on the welfare of head potters, he said two hostels have been put up in Madina and Ashaiman which would be inaugurated on May 4, 2024 to accommodate them following which they would be equipped with vocational skills to empower them economically
The Municipal Chief Executive ((MCE) for La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, Hon. Jennifer Dede Adjabeng on behalf of the traders, expressed appreciation to the Vice President for the premium he places on issues of women in the municipality, particularly, in times of distress.
She also applauded the commitment of His Excellency to ensuring that the necessary measures were put in place to restore the livelihood of the traders.
The MCE said though the fire caused extensive havoc, no casualties was recorded.
