A two-storey uncompleted building collapsed at Adentan New Site in the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality following over four hours of torrential rainfall on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, resulting in the death of a nine-month pregnant woman and injuries to four other persons.
According to eyewitnesses, the unfortunate incident occurred between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. when the structure gave way after continuous heavy rains battered the area.
The injured victims, who sustained varying degrees of injuries, were rescued from the rubble and rushed to the University of Ghana Medical Centre and the 37 Military Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.
Speaking to the media, a resident of the community, Mr. Fosu-Armah, said rescue operations lasted nearly six hours before all trapped persons were retrieved from beneath the debris.
“It took the rescue team almost six hours to rescue all the victims who had been buried under the collapsed structure,” he recounted.
Preliminary information gathered indicates that the developer of the building had previously been cautioned by the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly’s task force to halt construction activities and produce the necessary building permit. However, the developer allegedly ignored the directive and continued work on the project without approval.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipality, Hon. Ibrahim Faila Fusseini, on Thursday led a team of technical officers from the Assembly to inspect the collapsed building and commiserate with the bereaved family.
Addressing the media after the inspection, Hon. Fusseini reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing planning regulations and ensuring public safety.
“The Assembly will not relent in its efforts to demolish structures that have been erected on waterways and in unapproved locations. We will continue to enforce the law to protect lives and property,” he stated.
Following the inspection, the MCE, accompanied by the Chief of Okataban, toured several flood-prone areas within Adentan New Site, where many homes were inundated by floodwaters as a result of the heavy rains.
The inspection revealed that a number of houses had been constructed on waterways, obstructing the natural flow of storm water and contributing significantly to flooding within the community.
The Assembly has urged residents and developers to strictly adhere to building regulations and obtain the necessary permits before undertaking any construction projects. Residents have also been advised to avoid building on waterways and other unauthorized locations to prevent future disasters.
Investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
