The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LANMMA) has engaged traders, market workers and residents of Madina Market on environmental sanitation, public health, security and development issues affecting the municipality.

The engagement, held on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, brought together key stakeholders, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Ibrahim Faila Fusseini; Municipal Coordinating Director, Abena Kwesiwa Kyei; Madina Divisional Police Commander, C/Supt. Dr. Aba Afari; Heads of Department; and representatives from the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Addressing the gathering, the Municipal Coordinating Director outlined some development projects planned for the municipality. She announced that roads within the municipality were expected to be reconstructed within a year. She also mentioned plans to provide chairs for schools and construct bridges to improve accessibility in various communities.

The MCE, Hon. Ibrahim Faila Fusseini, stressed the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and healthy environment. He urged residents and market operators to adopt proper sanitation practices, noting that improved sanitation would benefit both the Assembly and the wider community.

He also responded to concerns raised by the public, including land demarcation, security and congestion within the market. He assured the gathering that inspections would be conducted and that steps would be taken to strengthen security through the deployment of additional personnel.

The MCE further reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to road reconstruction as part of efforts to improve infrastructure, promote development and enhance the image of the community. He also appealed for support towards the provision of tables and chairs for schools in the municipality.

The EPA educated participants on environmental protection, recycling and the need to keep the environment free from filth. The ECG District Manager, meanwhile, advised residents to contact the company directly whenever they encountered electrical challenges and cautioned the public on the proper channels for addressing electricity-related concerns.

The Municipal Sanitation Officer also educated the public on the need to maintain clean surroundings, while the LANMMA Revenue Officer appealed to residents and traders to pay their taxes, rates and other statutory fees promptly to enable the Assembly to provide essential services.

The Madina Divisional Police Commander, C/Supt. Dr. Aba Afari, urged the public to support efforts to maintain security in the market. She particularly encouraged families and the community to support young girls working as head potters to return to school and pursue their education for a better future.

During an open forum, community members raised concerns about electricity supply, sanitation and security. One trader complained that a faulty transformer had resulted in the spoilage of her foodstuffs. In response, the ECG District Manager indicated that there were no known current transformer challenges but assured the trader that the matter would be followed up.

Another participant expressed concern that complaints about electricity service disruptions were sometimes not adequately addressed despite ECG’s appeal to the public to report such challenges.

Participants also complained about rubbish being dumped in front of business premises even after payments had reportedly been made for cleaning services. They appealed to the MCE to intervene. Other concerns included theft, poor sanitation, congestion, inadequate surveillance and structural vulnerabilities within the market, which participants said posed security risks to shoppers and traders.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the Assembly and its partner institutions to educate the public while listening to concerns affecting their daily activities.

In his closing remarks, the MCE appealed to market workers, traders and residents to make proper sanitation a priority and work together with the Assembly to improve the cleanliness, safety, health and overall image of the Madina community.
