The La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly yesterday Tuesday, February 1, 2022 launched the “operation clean your frontage” campaign with a float through the principal street in the municipality. The initiative by the Regional Minister, Henry Quartey forms part of the President’s vision of making the City of Accra, the cleanest in Africa. The launch date, which also coincided with the implementation day of the initiative was to sensitise residents, traders and shop owners to be responsible for their immediate surroundings.
A team comprising the MCE for the Municipality, Hon. Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, various Heads of Department, staff from NADMO, Environmental Health Unit and the staff of the Assembly participated in the process. Moving through the major streets of the municipality, the occasion was used to sensitize the public on the need to keep their surroundings clean and also to warn them about the return of sanitary inspection to the communities.
The campaign took them through Madina Zongo, Ritz Junction, Oyarifa, West Adenta, north Legon, Atomic Junction, Madina Estate, Atomic junction, North Legon, UPSA, all aimed at sensitizing residents and traders on the initiative and also notifying them that no form of excuses will be tolerated after the launch as offenders will be taken on by the law.
Speaking to some residents and the media, the Municipal Chief executive, Madam Jennifer Dede Adjabeng stressed that the vision of the president to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa will be strictly enforced.
She advised that getting punished for poor sanitation is an avoidable offense and urged the residents to take full responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean
“imagine getting imprisoned together with a rapist or an armed robber for failing to clean your surroundings, it is very absurd, so let’s all ensure that we take this initiative very serious, dump refuse at only designated places, inform the assembly whenever you want to clean the gutters so that we can make provision for the collection and if your house does not own a dustbin, visit the zonal council to register” she said. She was emphatic that the assembly will be very ruthless in applying the laws on offending citizens.
The general public were receptive to the idea as a good initiative to curb poor sanitation in the municipality. However they advised the assembly to follow through the implementation and hoped this shall not become a nine day wonder.
