Regional Minister Launches Regional Sanitation Day

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Akwetey Ocloo has launched the Regional Sanitation Day at the forecourt of Melcom, Madina Branch in Accra on Friday, February 28, 2025.

The initiative is part of efforts of the Hon. Minister to promote environmental cleanliness, improve public health and foster community participation in waste management in harmony with His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda.

Hosted by the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly, the day was marked with a massive clean-up exercise at Madina Zongo Junction and its environs.

Prior to the exercise which started at 6:00 am, all shop owners were cautioned not to open till noon while shop operators and traders, staff of LaNMMA, Zoom lion, personnel from Fire Service and other youth groups were seen participating in the exercise.

The exercise saw gutters and drains being desilted, debris removed while fire tenders of the Ghana National Fire Service was used to flush the gutters of mud and sand remnants.

Launching it, Hon. Ocloo said “we can all bear witness to the devastation being caused by the cholera outbreak which should forewarn us and serve as a lesson to our health benefits.”

She said we owe it to our personal health and community safety to ensure environmental cleanliness at all times.

“Upon my visit to the market today, I am impressed with seeing market women sweeping their surroundings. Let’s keep it up”, she said.

The Hon. Regional Minister disclosed that plans are afoot for government to construct an ultra-modern market which would contain ancillary facilities such as kindergarten, washrooms, fire service amongst others.

The minister made these remarks at the launch after she toured areas such as Baba Seidu Road, Zongo junction and VRA Lorry Park to inspect the clean-up exercise.

The Chief of Teiman, Nii Manle Dzahaa I, who spoke on behalf of chiefs of the area pledged their full support, together with the people, to the noble cause of environmental cleanliness being championed by the Hon. Regional Minister.

He said environmental cleanliness is a moral responsibility of all citizens which was non-negotiable for the sake of promoting healthy living.

The Chief urged the people to preach cleanliness to their neighbours at all times, adding that we all have a part to play in this campaign.

Among some dignitaries who took part in the exercise were, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyapong, Founder and Executive Chairman of Jospong Group; Mrs. Lilian Baeka, Chief Director of Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and Madam Abena Kwesiwa Kyei, Municipal Coordinating Director of LaNMMA.
