A fierce rainstorm which hit parts of Accra following a one-hour heavy downpour last Tuesday, 25th March, 2025, evening has left in its wake widespread devastation and havoc at Madina and some parts of the municipality.
Institutions affected included; Madina Technical Institute, Madina No.1 Cluster of Schools, Queen of Peace Catholic School, Presec Staff Basic School, Nkwantanang Basic School, Madina SDA Basic School and Madina Main Market.
Following the rains, which started around 5:00pm with dark clouds and strong winds, roofs of buildings were ripped off, billboards were taken down and scores of trees were uprooted by the strong winds some of which fell on building roofs, power lines and on the streets diverting the flow of traffic.
Led by Mr. Frederick Asiama, the Municipal Development Planning Officer, a team of assembly officials who visited the various disaster scenes include NADMO, Heads of Department, Assembly members, ECG officials and some traditional leaders.
In Madina, at the Technical School, some portions of the roof of the assembly hall, the principal’s office and other classrooms were ripped. The staff bungalow, compromising 5 rooms all had their roofs ripped off while part of the fence wall was also collapsed.
The Principal of the Institute, Madam Linda Aboah made a passionate appeal to the assembly and other relevant organizations to come to their aid to help restore the situation to normalcy.
The Madina No.1 School was not sparred of the ravaging rainstorm as four classrooms had their roofs ripped off including the Junior High School and the canteen.
The situation at Queen of Peace was such that, a fallen tree had collapsed the fence wall of the school and some portions of classes 4 & 5. The headmistress of the school, Madam Comfort Jabari said under the force of the circumstances, the pupils have been sent home to forestall further disaster since the situation was delicate.
An assessment of the situation at Presec Basic School showed that some portions of classrooms 1, 2 and 3 of school ‘1’ had their roofs affected.
It came to light, that a tree has fallen on the canteen of the Nkwantanang Cluster of school, while their KG was also affected.
At each scene of disaster, Mr. Asiama said, management has assessed the situation and will get in touch with the relevant organizations to address the outstanding concerns.
