


The La Nkwantanang–Madina Municipal Assembly joined the rest of the nation to commemorate Ghana’s 69th Independence Day with a colourful and patriotic ceremony held at the Madina Astroturf Park on Friday, 6th March 2026.
The celebration was held under the national theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.” The event brought together traditional authorities, government officials, security agencies, teachers, students, religious leaders, political party representatives, members of the media, and residents of the municipality to reflect on Ghana’s journey since independence.
Delivering the keynote address, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Ibrahim Faila Fusseini, welcomed participants on behalf of the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, and emphasized the significance of the day in Ghana’s history.
He noted that Ghana’s independence, achieved 69 years ago, was the result of the relentless sacrifices and determination of the country’s founding fathers and generations of patriots who believed in the vision of a free and united Africa.
“Ghana is free forever was not just a declaration of victory but a challenge to all Ghanaians to protect and sustain the freedom that was won at such a great cost,” the MCE stated.
Theme: Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope
Hon. Fusseini explained that this year’s theme is a call to action for all citizens to work together to build a prosperous nation that inspires hope for future generations.
He stressed that national development is not the responsibility of government alone but a collective duty that requires the active participation of every Ghanaian.
Government’s Commitment to Education
The MCE highlighted several initiatives introduced by the government under the leadership of President Mahama to strengthen the country’s education sector. These include:

The construction of 600 new basic school buildings nationwide, comprising 200 Primary Schools, 200 Junior High Schools, and 200 Kindergartens.

The No Fees Stress Policy, which supports first-year students admitted to public tertiary institutions by covering academic fees.

Free Tertiary Education for Persons Living with Disability, aimed at promoting inclusivity in higher education.

The expansion of the Free SHS Policy to selected private senior secondary schools to increase access to quality education.
Development Initiatives in the Municipality
The Municipal Chief Executive also highlighted key development projects undertaken by the Assembly to improve educational infrastructure within the municipality.
Among these initiatives are:

The construction of a modern classroom block at Pantang Basic School, aimed at providing a conducive learning environment for students.

The distribution of single and dual desks to Senior High Schools within the municipality to support effective teaching and learning.

A partnership with Qatar Charity for the construction of a new school building, teachers’ bungalow, clinic, and mosque for the Baba Yara School.
The MCE expressed profound gratitude to Qatar Charity for its support and contribution to the development of the municipality.
Call for Unity and Responsible Citizenship
Hon. Faila urged residents to reaffirm their commitment to unity, hard work, and responsible citizenship. He noted that Ghana’s strength lies in the collective determination of its people to work together for national development.
He also called on stakeholders to support the Assembly in its mandate to improve the living standards of residents in the municipality.
Emphasis on Sanitation
Addressing sanitation concerns, the MCE encouraged residents to actively participate in the Municipal Sanitation Day, held on the first Saturday of every month. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment is crucial for the health and well-being of the community.
Commendation to Students
The celebration featured impressive marching displays by students from various schools across the municipality. The MCE commended them for their discipline, smart turnout, and patriotic spirit.
He concluded by congratulating all participants and extending warm wishes to residents on the occasion of Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary.
